In the 1880s, the D. J. Lake & Co. published Atlases for counties across the country. The Atlas of Rockingham County, Virginia, was created from actual surveys by J. M. Lathrop and B. N. Griffing. The maps provide details of homeowners and business, school, church, road, and waterway locations. The precision is remarkable and the overall effect is lovely. The current edition has been reprinted with a revised index to facilitate searching.
