Closed on major holidays. Call ahead to confirm winter holiday and inclement weather schedule.
We are located in Historic Dayton Virginia near the greenway at Cooks Creek Park, just 5 miles south of Harrisonburg on Route 42.
A pleasant stroll along the greenway takes you to our new neighbor, the Virginia Quilt Museum. and our old friends, the flora and fauna, at picturesque Silver Lake.

FAQs
When can I visit?
The museum, library, bookstore, and welcome center are open year round, Tuesday – Saturday, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Extra closings around the winter holidays are tempting to the staff, so please schedule an appointment before making your plans.
2025-2026 Winter Holiday Schedule:
Christmas Week—open Tuesday Dec 23 and Saturday Dec 27
New Year’s Week—open Tuesday Jan 30
Week of Jan 4—open Saturday Jan 10

Are there admission fees?
Admission is now “Pay As You Can” (suggested adult admission $10). Students and children are always free. As a member of the Museums for All program, all fees are waived for families presenting SNAP EBT cards.
What interstate exit should I take?
Traveling to Harrisonburg from Winchester: exit 245 (north entrance)
Traveling to Harrisonburg from Staunton: exit 240 (south entrance)
Is the building accessible?
A gentle ramp transitions from the parking lot to the entrance, bookstore, and restrooms. Inside, a lift elevator helps you enter the galleries and library.
Is there a tour schedule?
The galleries of the museum are self-guided. Tour guides may be prearranged.
