Author Janis Norton shared her journey writing her debut historical fiction novel, What the Red Oak Saw, a sweeping tale of five generations of the Cleary family. This story follows a family whose home lies in the shadow of a distinctive oak tree, from their immigration out of famine in Ireland to the Blue Ridge Mountains and later into the valley below. As one family leader after another grapples with the particular challenges of the time, a tree thrives and stands guard somewhat mysteriously.
