Along the way, you’ll meet local Voices of Democracy—people whose actions helped shape Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and beyond.
Designed for visitors of all ages, the exhibition combines authentic history with colorful graphics, original illustrations, and hands-on experiences that encourage curiosity and conversation. After all, democracy has never been shaped by just a handful of famous names. It has always depended on people who asked questions, shared ideas, served their communities, and inspired others to participate.

The story of democracy belongs to more than presidents, generals, and famous statesmen. Teachers, ministers, immigrants, reformers, journalists, volunteers, business leaders, and neighbors have all influenced how people could live, learn, participate, and belong.
Throughout this exhibition, you’ll meet local Voices of Democracy whose actions helped shape Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Some challenged injustice. Others built institutions, strengthened communities, or inspired future generations. Together, they remind us that every voice has the power to make a difference.
