Secrets & Symbols
Freemasonry’s Rockingham County History
Annual History Celebration with Matt Phillippi | Tues Oct 20 | Reception 6p | Presentation 7p

What do George Washington, the American Revolution, and generations of Rockingham County men have in common? Freemasonry is part of their story.
Join Rocktown History for our Annual History Celebration on Tuesday, October 20. We’ll begin with a reception in the galleries at 6 pm—a chance to enjoy light refreshments, cake, and conversation as we celebrate another year of local history, programs, and community support.
At 7 pm, Matt Phillippi presents Secrets & Symbols: Freemasonry’s Rockingham County History.
Freemasonry grew from the ideas of the Enlightenment, and many prominent figures of the American Revolution belonged to Masonic lodges. But its history isn’t limited to famous names such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. Freemasonry has deep roots in Rockingham County, where members of the fraternity have participated in community life for generations.
Phillippi will introduce the history and traditions of Freemasonry, separate some of the mystery from the reality, and share stories of local Freemasons who appear throughout Rockingham County history—from the nation’s earliest years to more recent times.

A Harrisonburg native with family roots in the Shenandoah Valley dating to the Revolutionary era, Matt Phillippi is an accountant by profession and a lifelong student of history. His particular interests include local history and historical trades, especially joinery. He currently serves as Worshipful Master of Rockingham Union Lodge No. 27, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, in Harrisonburg. He is also active with the local Scouting America council and Plane Wellness, a nonprofit that promotes mental wellness through woodworking.

Why Tuesday? October Thursdays belong to our friends at Massanutten Regional Library and the Deyerle Lecture Series. This special Tuesday gathering means local history lovers don’t have to choose!
